Goodbye Summer

It was chilly today. I stepped out our front door in my typical skirt and traded my flip-flops for some knee high boots. I refuse to put my beloved skirts into hibernation because there's a chill in the air. I'd much rather just keep my legs warm with some new boots, chocolate brown boots to be exact.
I've grown to love Texas summers. Hot, yes. Beautiful, yes. Bountiful, yes. I love the heat because it brings a glorious harvest in my garden. Although I'm ready for some cooler weather, I'm not ready to say goodbye to my spring garden. Success! This years garden was a huge success!
So, goodbye bright red tomatoes, mile long green beans, cucumbers and zucchini. Goodbye hours spent in the summer heat working the garden. Goodbye sweet butterflies who would garden along side of us. Goodbye, you will be greatly missed.
What saddens me about saying goodbye to this season is it's my last year of gardening with a 3 year-old Eli and one-year old Emma. I am raising gardeners and it is well. Emma ate dirt while Eli and I picked tomatoes. Eli begged me about 1,000 times every morning to check the garden. I watched as Eli inspected our garden beds to see which veggies were ready. We gave tours. We shared our bounty. We lived in the garden. It is what makes our house a home.
